A Tale of Two Teams

The Vols came out flat and flaccid, and played like they couldn't care less.

On the other hand, the Boise State Broncos played with fire, passion, and fun.

Guess which team won their game?

I was going to write more about the Vols, but why should I try harder than they did?

I don't know, I wasn't really surprised because they didn't really play much differently than they played all season. Couldn't stop the run on defense and gave up big plays (especially 3rd-and-long), couldn't run the ball consistently and fumbled at inopportune times. Good kicking game, bad return game, brilliant execution at times in passing game but plagued by unfortunate drops and bad breaks on out-of-bounds catches, also marred by stupid penalties and nonexistent penalties (Meachem's offensive pass interference).

In short, while they could've played better and won the game result wasn't unexpected and for once they played the bowl game like they did every other team. Penn State was just one notch above us, like UF, LSU and Arkansas.

I didn't get the impression they were flat, though. They just didn't have the ability to do what was needed. Maybe another year in the training will help Foster hold the ball or our DB's keep up with fleet-footed receivers or do more than arm-tackle big RB's.

We'll see.
