The Grammies

Ok, first a confession:

I haven't watched a full Grammy telecast since they gave Milli Vanilli the Grammy. They kinda lost credibility, don't you think?

Anyway, I flipped back and forth a couple of times, then watched the last half hour or so. Here's what I saw.

  • Barry and Robin Gibb receiving their award and giving it to Maurice's son, Adam while Maurice's wife bawled. I got misty.
  • Norah Jones sweeping New Artist, Best Record and Album of the Year, proving that you can succeed in music without being a a foul mouthed punk or a slut. Marshall, Christina and Brittany, are you paying attention?
  • Aretha Franklin and Bonnie Riatt presenting an award. Aretha has grown in stature over the years, and Bonnie couldn't get in the same zipcode as the microphone. But when Aretha let out a couple bars of R-E-S-P-E-C-T, it just didn't matter. She's still the Queen of Soul.
  • Eminem obviously reading the lyrics to his song "Lose Yourself." Last I checked, rap used to be improvised. I know hip hop has moved away from those roots, but still, when you perform on the Grammy's, it would be nice if you could remember the lyrics to your own freakin' song.
  • Most of the awards are presented before the show, and read off right before a commercial break. Adding insult to injury, they screwed up the order on the last break, showing the wrong pictures as the announcer read out the awards.

I rpobably missed other high and low lights, but I'm sure you can read about them on other blogs.

And I really, really wanted to hate N'Sync's tribute to the BGs but I have to admit it was great and those guys can sing.

And I really, really wanted to like Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock but they kinda sucked. Except the drummer, he was pretty good. And Kid Rock was OK, I guess.

You just never know.

I really enjoyed the Dixie Chicks - they're just always great live. I thought Springsteen sucked but I've never been a big fan anyway...Also, I thought Simon & Garfunkel were good. Norah looked very nervous but with her voice, who cares? Pretty good show all in all.

Oh, and Faith Hill, although she has fabulous legs, looked like a slut..IMHO.

Sheryl Crow had "No War" on her guitar strap. Unfortunately for her, her hair covered up the "No," which tended to send the opposite message. I missed N'SYNC (darn) but when they aren't dancing and lip sincing, those boys can sing. Too bad they don't get more of a chance to prove it. The Clash tribute was good, but you're raight, Bruce wasn't at his best.

Were the Grammy's on? I didn't know they still presented them. Kinda pointless these day, aren't they?

So...did Jethro Tull beat out Metallica again?
