Dept of the Obvious pt.2 Clothes make make the man, but cosmetic surgery can't make him a woman. That's the upshot of a decision by the Kansas Supremem court in holding invalid a marriage between an 85 year old man and a 40 year old transexual. It's clearly the right decision. Surgical mutilation of external genitalia does not affect the sex of the recipient any more than having a mastectomy does.
Posted by Rich at March 15, 2002 2:50 PMI hope that your own marriage is retroactively declared invalid by a court. In the meantime, it's nice that you can get satisfaction in rejoicing in the misfortune of a small minority.
Posted by: Catherine Devlin on May 2, 2003 3:49 PMWhoops. That was my evil side talking. What I meant to say was, "I hope you *never* have your marriage retroactively declared invalid by a court." Because, while that would be very educational, I'd prefer that you learn compassion in a less painful way.

Show me where I rejoice in anyone's misfortune? My comment was simply that the judge made the right decision based on the law, which still holds that marriage is between a man and a woman, not two men.
I note that you don't address my argument. Your sex is determined by your genes, not by surgical alteration. The court was right to recognize that fact.
Now if you'd have read some of my other writings, you would know that far from rejoicing in misfortune of transgendered or homosexuals, I support gay marriage. Check out this post:
So, should gays be allowed to marry? Certainly! They are persons and have every right to enter into a civil contract if they want to.
Should gays be allowed to serve in the military? Sure!
Should gays be able to adopt children? Yes.
